Urgenci renforce sa présence en Asie et dans les Amériques. URGENCI, le réseau international de l’agriculture soutenue par la communauté, a atteint un nouveau stade de maturité lors de son Vème Symposium bisannuel, qui s’est tenu du 20 au 23 Janvier 2013 à Monterey, en Californie. Les trois premiers colloques avaient eu lieu en Europe, à Aubagne, en France (2004 et 2008) et à Palmela, au Portugal (2005).

During another workshop dedicated to the effect of Fukushima disaster, Shinji gave an in-depth explanation of the condition of organic farmers in Japan, because many of them are involved both in the short-term – especially those who farmed in the region of Fukushima - but also in the long-term effect of the disaster. The growth of China’s middle class is driving an expansion of interest in ‘green’ and sustainable food, food that is perceived to be healthy, safe, and environmentally-friendly. Self-consciously ‘sustainable’ agriculture is a new phenomenon in China; but it has emerged from, and builds upon, an agrarian history that is markedly different from that of the West. In this paper, we address the relationship between the Chinese middle class, an overwhelmingly urban group, and Chinese sustainable agriculture, a largely urban-oriented enterprise, from the perspective of our work in establishing and operating Beijing’s first Community Supported Agriculture farm. We find that, in light of the development pathways taken by sustainable and alternative agriculture(s) internationally, there is much hope for the future of sustainable agriculture in China; and we predict that its development will be swiftest in (peri-) urban contexts.

Même un militant comme Shinpei a fini par se tranquilliser, et lorsqu’il s’est installé il y a 9 ans à Iitaté pour pratiquer sur 6ha de terres et forêt naturelle une agriculture respectueuse de l’environnement, les 40 km qui le séparaient de la centrale de Fukushima lui ont semblé suffisants. On lui avait expliqué qu’en cas d’alerte au tsunami les centrales seraient automatiquement stoppées. En réalité, une centrale a besoin d’électricité provenant de l’extérieur pour s’arrêter ; et environ 30 ans sont nécessaires pour que l’arrêt soit définitif.

es pays du Sud recensent 80% des ressources naturelles mondiales, attisant la convoitise des sociétés transnationales. Celles-ci sont prêtes à tout pour se les approprier à coup de brevets et autres titres de propriété intellectuelle.
Pour tenter de pallier cette biopiraterie, la Convention sur la diversité biologique propose un « partage des bénéfices » entre ces firmes, les peuples autochtones et les pays du Sud.
Presque 20 ans après l’entrée en vigueur de cette Convention, ce partage est-il réellement « équitable » et « bénéfique » pour les peuples ? Garantit-il la poursuite de l’innovation collective ? La valorisation marchande de la nature permet-elle de protéger la biodiversité ?

Le Japon a été frappé ce jour par une catastrophe naturelle majeure. Cela s’est déroulé un an, presque jour pour jour, après le Colloque international d’Urgenci qui s’est tenu à Kobé, une ville qui avait été dévastée par le tremblement de terre de 1995. Au milieu de chaos, nos pensées vont aux personnes de bonne volonté qui nous ont hébergés et accueillis à Kobé, Tanba-City, Osaka, Tokyo et au village Miyoshi. Nous n’oublierons jamais les grands moments passés là-bas, avec eux. Depuis février 2010, quand le Japon est touché, nous sommes tous affectés.

Today, Japan was hit by a major disaster. This happened one year almost exactly after the International Symposium Urgenci held in Kobe, a town that was devastated by a deadly Earthquake in 1995. In the midst of destruction, our thoughts go to the good people who sheltered us in Kobe, Tanba-City, Osaka, Tokyo and Miyoshi Village. We will never forget the great moments we spent there. Thus, since February 2010, when Japan is hit, we are also affected.

Dans sa course effrénée au développement, le peuple de Taiwan s’est déconnecté de la plupart de ses traditions agricoles, de ses compétences rurales et de la sagesse des agriculteurs Hakka ou des tribus indigènes de l’île. Une redécouverte de cet héritage est pourtant peut-être en train d’avoir lieu.

Within the boundaries of the base, the army still holds 27 hectares. 20 families also live there, with several well-developed market farms and a no-permit factory. Ren-Ji said 1/3 of the resident families like his idea for an eco-farm park, 1/3 want to sell out to developers and 1/3 are undecided. He wants to take it slowly and have a democratic process.

reening the city is the main topic this year for the community organizing class that meets Saturday mornings. The instructor is an energetic man, Tung-Jye Wu, who seems to be one of the main instigators of the July 17 action I described earlier. TJ, as he is called, has a great sense of humor and greets the absurdities of life with a loud, spontaneous laugh that gets everyone laughing with him.

In their headlong rush to development, the people of Taiwan lost most of their connections to their farming traditions and the rural skills and wisdom of Hakka farmers or the island’s indigenous tribes. But a rediscovery may be underway. Early in the summer of this year, the government proposed to change the country’s laws on farmland, eliminating the protections for small-scale family holdings. The proposal precipitated a visceral response. Within ten days, citizens organized and thousands of people turned out on July 17 when the Taiwan Rural Front planted a rice field in front of the Presidential Palace in Taipei. It was, in the words of a Tao-Yuan planner, “a watershed moment”. Rural organizers invited me to crisscross the island giving talks and visiting farms in the hope that Community Supported Agriculture will contribute to a “rural renaissance.”

With an aim to provide food security and enhance quality of life, GF has been promoting conservation and revival of traditional seed varieties in the project villages. GF has motivated and facilitated small and marginal farmers to adopt sustainable agriculture practices, which are low cost, environment friendly and sustainable. Several participatory crop improvement experiments have been conducted to enhance the yield performance of the food crops. The farmers are being trained in seed selection and crop improvement techniques. In a nutshell, GF has been working constantly to reduce the cost of production of food grains. In rainfed agriculture, the farmers dol not have a gainful employment round the year. Besides food production meets the requirements for les than ten months in a year. On an average, even in a good monsoon year, the farmers lack employment for at least 2-3 months. During the dry spell years, almost 50% of their time will be rendered unproductive. This results in the food insecurity of the resource poor communities due to drastic fall in the family income derived from agriculture. In order to eke out their living the farmers migrate to nearby towns and cities for wage employment.

Voici quelques moments phares de la conférence. Le premier jour, après l’accueil par les dignitaires des ministères national et préfectoral de l’agriculture, le Professeur Shigeru Yasuda a effectué une présentation de l’histoire de l’agriculture biologique au Japon. A présent retraité de l’Université de Kobé, Yasuda était un membre fondateur de l’Association de l’Agriculture biologique du Japon (JOAA, Japanese Organic Agriculture Association) en 1971 et l’un des auteurs des 10 principes Teikei en 1978, basés sur les cinq années d’expérience en Teikei (vous pouvez les lire en page 269 de Sharing the Harvest). L’homme qui a inspiré et fourni le socle philosophique pour la JOAA fut Teruo Ichiraku, un organisateur de coopératives de paysans. Scandalisé en apprenant que même le lait maternel était contaminé avec des pesticides, Ichiraku a développé une critique de l’agriculture de plus en plus entrepreunariale et industrielle, et a proposé des relations directes entre les paysans et leurs clients comme antidote.

The fourth in a series of biannual events, Urgenci gatherings bring together farmers, activists, and researchers involved in CSA/Teikei/Reciproco/AMAP/ASC and other cooperative ventures linking consumers directly with producers. For the past two years, Urgenci has been focusing on “missions,” sending two-person teams, an AMAP farmer and a consumer activist, to countries in Eastern Europe and north Africa to spread the word about consumer-producer cooperatives and to facilitate adaptations in each country.

Sans une société humaine fondée sur la souveraineté alimentaire, nous ne pourrons pas être capables d’atteindre un monde meilleur dans lequel l’humanité et la nature sont respectés. Nous voulons promouvoir ce type de société en participant au réseau international URGENCI, qui défend un système soutenant l’alimentation bio locale et les petits paysans, dans lequel l’alimentation et les fermes sont le fondement de la communauté, et où les communautés prennent soin de la Terre. C’est la signification d’une souveraineté alimentaire véritable. Cela signifie penser global et agir local.

The Kobe URGENCI Symposium has shared information on community supported food and agriculture. We have also discussed how to help feed people through small-scale organic family farming, how this approach can support people, communities, and Mother Earth. We proclaim that we will carry forward our responsibility for life and the earth by emphasizing the value of Local Solidarity-based Partnerships between Producers and Consumers, increasing awareness of the TEIKEI principles, developing a global URGENCI network, and promoting organic small-scale family farming.

Le mouvement d’URGENCI intègre déjà des concepts comme slow food, slow life et le locavorisme. De plus, son principal objectif est de revitaliser les communautés locales et de les aider à devenir de plus en plus autonomes. Nous faisons cela parce que nous estimons qu’il s’agit de l’un des plus sûrs moyens d’aboutir à une société durable

in Japan, a movement called Teikei has been working to expand organic agriculture through directly connecting producers and consumers, and therefore bridging “agriculture” and “diet” in the context of an equal relationship based on mutual trust. This movement has promoted and implemented “organic relationships,” “face to face relationships,” and “extending the producer’s table to that of the consumer.” One of my friends calls it “a relationship based on life sharing community building.” By this, she implies that Teikei is a new form of relationship that is created and maintained through common concerns and respect for each other’s life among strangers, in contrast with traditional rural communities based on territorial or blood relationships.

Le mouvement Teikei est un système de contrôle en soi. La confiance et l’échange, les petites dimensions des groupes et l’engagement de chacun le prouvent. Si des normes et des contrôles sont appliqués de manière générale, un système de contrôle indépendant, exercé par les producteurs et les consommateurs eux-mêmes (comme cela se fait déjà chez Teikei), doit être reconnu et pris en compte indépendamment. Pour cela, Teikei a besoin d’un soutien international pour se développer afin que les consommateurs réalisent quel profit ils peuvent en tirer par rapport au système conventionnel et quel est le potentiel de développement de l’agriculture bio. Nous devons protéger, préserver et encourager Teikei au sein du mouvement international pour le biologique, IFOAM.

Teikei is not merely an alternative distribution system of organic products, but rather an ecological production and consumption system that places the producers and consumers in a dynamic and creative relationship.
The community sharing direct distribution systems, and the ecological consciousness fostered in the teikei system is what we need take our organic movement to the next level of its development.

Après un mois et demi en Malaisie, je me plais toujours autant découvrant de nouvelles choses chaque jours. Le travail est relativement dur ici de part le climat tropical d’une part et parceque l’on travaille de 6 à 8 h par jour et ce 7j/7! Je prends cependant des jours de congés de temps à autre pour me reposer car éprouvant!
