I attended the study tour of AMAPS (Association for the maintenance of Peasant Agriculture) with people from UK (5 in total) Croatia (2) Hungary (5?) Austria (3) France (2) and Germany (1). The trip was organised by Jocelyn Parot of Urgenci and funded by Grundtvig.
My impressions
I came, especially to learn more about:
· AMAP longevity, identity and dynamics (social interaction with members for instance)
· Network functionality, regionally and nationally
I wanted to find out more about these aspects to enrich the knowledge base for us to make decisions in the UK on the founding of the UK CSA network and raising of the profile of CSA generally.
This was a very worthwhile insight into how AMAPS work and why they have been so successful.

Coming home, I have a grasp of what is happening concerning CSA within many EU countries, a feeling of who is involved within each of those places & a much clearer picture of where I see our own CSA’s developing. I also have a greater understanding of the sustainability agenda in relation to food. My understanding of ‘solidarity’ across European borders has grown.

The workshop was held on July 13th in Monastir, between 15h30 and 17h30. It was moderated by Professor Habib Ayeb. A number of international experts who had taken part in the People’s Summit in Rio de Janeiro the previous month also contributed. Altermondialist activists also participated in the discussions that followed the speaker’s input.

Appel pour une rencontre européenne sur l’Agriculture Soutenue par la Communauté (ASC) et les autres systèmes de distribution pour la Souveraineté Alimentaire du 10 au 12 Octobre 2012 à Milan, Italie.
Cette rencontre s’inscrit dans la continuité du processus de travail mis en place par le Forum de Nyéléni-Europe qui s’est tenu à Krems en Autriche en août dernier. Elle se concentrera sur l’Axe 2 du Plan d’Action : « Changer la manière dont la nourriture est distribuée ».

he Information tour in the Czech Republic within the “CSA For Europe” programme took place on January, 20-24, 2012. It was focused on general public and farmers that already are involved in direct sale, veggie boxes, etc., but mostly were not aware of CSA at all. The information tour was meant as a set of workshops, lectures and public discussions in four major cities of the Czech Republic. The events took place in Prague, Brno, České Budějovice and Ostrava.
Chinese Sustainable Agriculture and the Rising Middle Class: Analysis from Participatory Research in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) at Little Donkey Farm

The growth of China’s middle class is driving an expansion of interest in ‘green’ and sustainable food, food that is perceived to be healthy, safe, and environmentally-friendly. Self-consciously ‘sustainable’ agriculture is a new phenomenon in China; but it has emerged from, and builds upon, an agrarian history that is markedly different from that of the West. In this paper, we address the relationship between the Chinese middle class, an overwhelmingly urban group, and Chinese sustainable agriculture, a largely urban-oriented enterprise, from the perspective of our work in establishing and operating Beijing’s first Community Supported Agriculture farm. We find that, in light of the development pathways taken by sustainable and alternative agriculture(s) internationally, there is much hope for the future of sustainable agriculture in China; and we predict that its development will be swiftest in (peri-) urban contexts.

Urgenci has contact with many and various AMAP-like initiatives in the world. On the occasion of the Attac “European academy for social movements” (ENA) held in Freiburg, the international CSA network invited the regional AMAP network Alliance PEC Rhône-Alpes to talk about its experience and to discover the German network “Solidarische Landwirtschaft” and the action of a local group, Gartencoop in Freiburg.

Offering healthy, organic and fresh fruits and vegetables, without any market intermediary, ie directly from the producer to the consumer, is a simple idea that arouses enthusiasm around the world. Alas, this is not so simple to implement, and until now, no such offer existed in Togo. Because, first, you have to generate trust between farmers and eaters. And that’s obviously where the difficulties begin!
In Lomé, Togo’s first AMAP is just born this month, and the delivery of products will soon begin. Let us briefly tell how it has been made possible.

Après cinq jours d’échanges intenses et constructifs, le Forum européen Nyeleni 2011 pour la souveraineté alimentaire s’est terminé hier par l’adoption de la Déclaration Européenne pour la Souveraineté Alimentaire.
Plus de 400 délégué(e)s de 34 pays d’Europe se sont engagé(e)s à renforcer leur capacité collective pour exercer un contrôle citoyen sur notre système alimentaire et dénoncer celui imposé par l’agro-business. Ce faisant, ils ont élargi et renforcé le mouvement européen pour la souveraineté alimentaire.

Summary of the project:
A 50-share vegetable CSA scheme based near Leeds, West Yorkshire, in a 2 acre walled garden. Members sign up for 12 months, at £614 for a full share, and £372 for a half share. One full-time grower is contract employed. Budgetary and planting decisions are made by the landowner.

Summary of the project:
The Community Supported Agriculture scheme farms around 700 acres on two farms, 3 miles apart; they are Tablehurst and Plaw Hatch. For 20 years, 500 acres of this land has been farmed bio-dynamically and the remaining 200 acres, which have recently been rented, are undergoing conversion to bio-dynamic status. The farms have an annual turnover in excess of £1m.

NAME OF THE LSP/CSA : Stroud Community Agriculture (SCA), UK.
Summary of the project:
In 2001 a group of people came together to find a better way to feed themselves. Within 3 months they were renting an acre of land and employing a vegetable grower. Within 2 years they had set up Stroud Community Agriculture (SCA) as an Industrial and Provident Society, were renting 23 acres of land, providing vegetables and meat to 60 families and
making a profit.
Six years on SCA is:
- renting 50 acres,
- employing 2 full time farmer/growers,
- providing vegetables and meat to 189 households,
- making enough profit to pay a bonus to its farmers/growers,
- paying for a part-time treasurer and membership administrator,
- buying in citrus fruit and olive oil from a sister CSA in Spain,
- maintaining a regular programme of social and working events.

NAME OF THE LSP/CSA : Gas Calci, Italy.
Summary of the project:
An ethical purchasing group (gruppo d’acquisto solidale in Italian- Gas) is composed of people who decide to get together for purchasing wholesale foodstuffs or everyday products, which they redistribute among them selves.
A group of purchasers is said to be “solidarity-based” when they decide to use the concept of solidarity as a guide criterion in the choice of the products they buy. It starts with members of the group addressing small and local producers which supply the products and is expanding to the respect for the environment, for the people of the “ south of the world” and to those who – because of the unfair distribution of wealth – are victims of the unequal consequences of the current model of development.

Summary of the project:
The community has formed around the environmental centre in Prague that provides free space for deliveries. Formally, the civic association PRO-BIO LIGA runs the community, however in praxis it is run more or less by the members. The community supports three farmers throughout the season mostly by means of payments in advance.

Summary of the project:
Gela is the first CSA-project in Austria. It started in December 2009. In the gela-project consumers agree to finance one year / one season in advance. Without the strong influence of market forces, it is possible to share the risks and to sustain the “Gärtnerhof Ochsenherz” with the core principles of ecological sustainability, quality and diversity.

Dans sa course effrénée au développement, le peuple de Taiwan s’est déconnecté de la plupart de ses traditions agricoles, de ses compétences rurales et de la sagesse des agriculteurs Hakka ou des tribus indigènes de l’île. Une redécouverte de cet héritage est pourtant peut-être en train d’avoir lieu.

Plutôt qu’un compte rendu exhaustif sur nos visites et rencontres sur place, nous avons préféré relater ici nos impressions sous forme de flash-coups de coeur et synthèses des évènements et avancées par rapport à notre dernière visite. Nos rencontres se sont déroulées en trois temps :
- le premier avec Irena O’Connell et Sirkka Pintmann, initiatrices des OTT (sortes d’amap) et des groupes de consommateurs et des producteurs des OTT de Raasiku et Kuusalu ,
- le second avec Merit Mikk, de la Fondation estonienne de l’agriculture biologique avec des représentants de différents groupements d’agriculteurs biologiques et des groupes de consommateurs,
- le troisième, sous l’égide de Merit Mikk et à l’initiative de l’association des agriculteurs biodynamiques estoniens, avec un colloque au manoir de Saue sur les alternatives existantes à une alimentation industrielle et importée. Ce colloque a rassemblé entre autres les diffférents représentants des groupes ci-dessus ainsi que des producteurs et consommateurs indépendants.

Within the boundaries of the base, the army still holds 27 hectares. 20 families also live there, with several well-developed market farms and a no-permit factory. Ren-Ji said 1/3 of the resident families like his idea for an eco-farm park, 1/3 want to sell out to developers and 1/3 are undecided. He wants to take it slowly and have a democratic process.

reening the city is the main topic this year for the community organizing class that meets Saturday mornings. The instructor is an energetic man, Tung-Jye Wu, who seems to be one of the main instigators of the July 17 action I described earlier. TJ, as he is called, has a great sense of humor and greets the absurdities of life with a loud, spontaneous laugh that gets everyone laughing with him.

In their headlong rush to development, the people of Taiwan lost most of their connections to their farming traditions and the rural skills and wisdom of Hakka farmers or the island’s indigenous tribes. But a rediscovery may be underway. Early in the summer of this year, the government proposed to change the country’s laws on farmland, eliminating the protections for small-scale family holdings. The proposal precipitated a visceral response. Within ten days, citizens organized and thousands of people turned out on July 17 when the Taiwan Rural Front planted a rice field in front of the Presidential Palace in Taipei. It was, in the words of a Tao-Yuan planner, “a watershed moment”. Rural organizers invited me to crisscross the island giving talks and visiting farms in the hope that Community Supported Agriculture will contribute to a “rural renaissance.”

In the model established by Ehne, it is clearly a producer Union that takes the initiative. It is the Union that offers its human, logistic and communication means at disposition. It is the Union that structures the network of producers and, ultimately, makes the last decision between all of the suggestions. The Union also makes the tradeoffs. This reminds of the Quebec case where the committee is in charge of following the Equiterre network, made of 12 farmers that represent the 100 of farms in the network that makes the decision whether or not to integrate the farmers willing to participate in the community supported agriculture. The professional dimension is even more affirmed than in France, which is presented as an answer to the will of the producers themselves.

Depuis 4 ans, le syndicat paysan Ehne-Biscaye, membre fondateur de La Via Campesina (en 1996), consacre ses efforts à la mise en œuvre d’initiatives de circuits-courts alimentaires et en partenariat, inspirés, entre autres, de l’expérience des AMAP françaises. En 2010, on recense déjà une centaine de paysans qui organisent leur production afin de réaliser une vente directe avec les consommateurs.

Alliance Provence hosted a meeting between representatives of Equiterre, Urgenci, Alliance PEC Rhône-Alpes and Alliance Provence. This meeting enabled the participants to gain a better understanding of the origins of North American Community supported Agriculture, and the way in which the model has evolved. It also provided the opportunity to examine the activities that the network runs and the perspectives for CSA in coming years.

Notre visite dans la région Ile-de-France a duré cinq jours. Durant tout ce temps, nous avons pu visiter sept fermes qui fonctionnent en AMAP, dont quatre étaient en maraichage, deux étaient en arboriculture (fruits, jus de fruits, cidre, vinaigre de cidre, etc.) et une était spécialisée dans la production de fromage de chèvre. Lors de nos visites de fermes nous avons eu l’occasion d ‘assister a une distribution de paniers de légumes chez Jean-Louis Colas (à la ferme même).
Une partie importante de notre visite a été consacrée à la rencontre des mangeurs (ou AMAP’iens) surtout ceux de l ‘AMAP de Fontenay-sous-bois (la ville où nous avons logé, chez Sylvie et Marie-Pierre). Nous avons eu l occasion d’échanger lors du repas commun au restaurant associatif de La Milonga, organisé par les Amapiens, mais aussi lors des soirées informelles passées avec Sylvie, Marie-Pierre et d’autres mangeurs.

AMAP, alebo Združenie pre podporu vidieckeho poľnohospodárstva, má za cieľ udržať malé hospodárstva na miestnej úrovni v súlade s východiskami trvalo udržateľného rozvoja. Inými slovami, usiluje sa o vznik poľnohospodárstva spravodlivého z hľadiska spoločenského a zdravého z hľadiska ekologického. Navyše umožňuje spotrebiteľom nakupovať kvalitné výrobky podľa vlastného výberu na základe presných informácií o ich pôvode a spôsobe výroby, a tiež aktívne sa zúčastňovať na záchrane a dlhodobom rozvoji miestneho poľnohospodárstva.
V AMAP sa spotrebitelia spoja s miestnym výrobcom prostredníctvom zmluvy, ktorá ich zaväzuje na začiatku sezóny odkúpiť časť celkovej produkcie, dodávanej pravidelne a za pevnú cenu. Výrobca sa zasa zaväzuje dodávať výrobky kvalitou zodpovedajúce pravidlám týchto Stanov (nasledujúci odsek), ako i zásadám vidieckeho poľnohospodárstva (viď prílohu).

Comme mangeurs, c’est sur des paysans proches et connus de nous, autonomes dans leurs moyens de production, engagés dans des pratiques agroécologiques que nous fondons nos espoirs. Comme paysans, c’est sur des consommateurs proches et connus de nous, conscients de l’importance de notre travail, que nous comptons pour assurer notre survie économique. Les uns et les autres, nous savons combien nous dépendons de la biodiversité cultivée, nous savons qu’il n’est pas d’agriculture paysanne sans semences paysannes et sans races animales locales, sans liberté de choix de sa semence pour le paysan. Nous savons que nous seuls avons les moyens de préserver ce qui reste de biodiversité cultivée, les paysans en renonçant aux semences des grandes firmes, les mangeurs en assurant aux paysans leur survie économique et leur liberté de choix.

Voici quelques moments phares de la conférence. Le premier jour, après l’accueil par les dignitaires des ministères national et préfectoral de l’agriculture, le Professeur Shigeru Yasuda a effectué une présentation de l’histoire de l’agriculture biologique au Japon. A présent retraité de l’Université de Kobé, Yasuda était un membre fondateur de l’Association de l’Agriculture biologique du Japon (JOAA, Japanese Organic Agriculture Association) en 1971 et l’un des auteurs des 10 principes Teikei en 1978, basés sur les cinq années d’expérience en Teikei (vous pouvez les lire en page 269 de Sharing the Harvest). L’homme qui a inspiré et fourni le socle philosophique pour la JOAA fut Teruo Ichiraku, un organisateur de coopératives de paysans. Scandalisé en apprenant que même le lait maternel était contaminé avec des pesticides, Ichiraku a développé une critique de l’agriculture de plus en plus entrepreunariale et industrielle, et a proposé des relations directes entre les paysans et leurs clients comme antidote.

A recurring question goes as follows: are the products delivered in the AMAPs organic ? To put it into different words: are the producers delivering within the AMAP system organic farmers or not ? Beyond the largely justified concern of the consumer for the quality of the products she is purchasing, there are also the worries felt by many farmers involved into the AMAP network: they fear they could not identify anymore with a movement that would be welcoming producers without paying attention to the basics. Moreover, beside the AMAP network, some organic farmers are afraid of a kind of unfair competition which would be led by the AMAPs, where distributed products are claimed to be organic without any certification required from the producers.

The Kobe URGENCI Symposium has shared information on community supported food and agriculture. We have also discussed how to help feed people through small-scale organic family farming, how this approach can support people, communities, and Mother Earth. We proclaim that we will carry forward our responsibility for life and the earth by emphasizing the value of Local Solidarity-based Partnerships between Producers and Consumers, increasing awareness of the TEIKEI principles, developing a global URGENCI network, and promoting organic small-scale family farming.

in Japan, a movement called Teikei has been working to expand organic agriculture through directly connecting producers and consumers, and therefore bridging “agriculture” and “diet” in the context of an equal relationship based on mutual trust. This movement has promoted and implemented “organic relationships,” “face to face relationships,” and “extending the producer’s table to that of the consumer.” One of my friends calls it “a relationship based on life sharing community building.” By this, she implies that Teikei is a new form of relationship that is created and maintained through common concerns and respect for each other’s life among strangers, in contrast with traditional rural communities based on territorial or blood relationships.

Nous faisons la connaissance de Vanja qui sera notre interprète. Vanja possède une grande facilité de contact et de langage. Elle s’attache à nous faire expliquer le concept AMAP et ce qu’on attend d’elle pour bien s ‘imprégner de nos idées. Elle semble avoir la même approche que nous de l’agriculture et de la « malbouffe » et nous sommes confiants quant à notre travail ensemble. Elle connaît des producteurs dans sa région natale. Le mouvement Teikei est un système de contrôle en soi. La confiance et l’échange, les petites dimensions des groupes et l’engagement de chacun le prouvent. Si des normes et des contrôles sont appliqués de manière générale, un système de contrôle indépendant, exercé par les producteurs et les consommateurs eux-mêmes (comme cela se fait déjà chez Teikei), doit être reconnu et pris en compte indépendamment. Pour cela, Teikei a besoin d’un soutien international pour se développer afin que les consommateurs réalisent quel profit ils peuvent en tirer par rapport au système conventionnel et quel est le potentiel de développement de l’agriculture bio. Nous devons protéger, préserver et encourager Teikei au sein du mouvement international pour le biologique, IFOAM.

Dans la famille de Kaisa (31 ans), Samuli (34 ans) et Saku (3 ans) Ronkanen, à Oulu, on va bientôt congeler le renne. De toute la portion de renne commandée en lien avec le réseau alimentaire, une moitié de jeune renne aura bientôt été consommée.
« On gardera la plus grande noisette rôtie comme dinde de Noël », déclare la mère de famille.
Les Ronkanen, qui appartiennent au cercle alimentaire, passent commande auprès des producteurs de la région une fois par mois. L’hiver est la saison haute.
Les produits locaux de proximité incitent les familles à rejoindre les cercles alimentaires. Les réseaux fonctionnent à plein régime durant l’hiver.
